Applications & Confirmation

Outdoor Program Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis.  Although part of the Troop Camping Application, a Troop Camping registration is not required to sign up for courses.  Day Visits, with or without site reservations, are welcome.  All applications are due 15 business days prior to the first requested program date on the application.  Confirmations of registration for Troops/Groups, including dates, times and designated locations, will be mailed to you.  This confirmation packet will also include a map, roster and (if applicable) Permission Slips.  Completed Permission Slips and roster must be presented before class will be started.  If Permission Slip is required and not complete and/or signed by parent or legal guardian, the participant will not be allowed to participate.  Sorry, no additional wait time will be permitted for those whose paperwork is incomplete.

Refunds

Full refunds available only for Troops/Groups who cancel their registration in writing at least 15 business days prior to their scheduled event.  Individuals participants who cancel at least 3 business days prior to the event will receive a credit voucher (good for any Outdoor Program Elective for 1 year).  Credit vouchers will be issued to participants if event is cancelled by GSMD due to inclement weather, etc.

CHALLENGE COURSES

Permission Slip Required  |  April-November

High Climbing Course

7th Grade or Higher Only  |  $15/each, minimum 8 girls

This challenge course on the Metamora Tango Tower provides further opportunity for teamwork with an added emphasis on individual goals.  Allows participants to expand their comfort zone and challenge themselves as well as their group.  All participants are outfitted with helmets, safety harnesses, and safety rope (similar to rock climbing).  Proper spotting and belay technique is explained and practiced before anyone leaves the ground.  Each participants has the opportunity to complete 3 challenges during a half-day program.  Participant may have the opportunity to use the zip line and rock walls.  Download Registration Form

Combination Climb/Low Tower  (1½ hrs.)

5th Grade or Higher Only  |  $10/each, minimum 8 girls

Participants will have the opportunity to try out the Climbing Wall portion of the Tango Tower while also working as a team on the low elements of the Tower.  This program combines the low course and one time climb into a ½ day program for troop or group.  Download Registration Form

Narrin Challenge

5th Grade or Higher Only  |  $10/each, minimum 8 girls

This activity is designed for groups to challenge themselves not only as an individual but also as a group by using their strengths, creativity and strategic planning.  The challenges are different for each group, and vary depending on the group’s dynamics, size, and age.  A group typically completes 3 to 5 challenges during a half-day program.  Download Registration Form

Indoor Team/Challenge Program  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $7/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 15

This activity is designed for groups to challenge themselves as a team through a series of games and challenges presented to them.  Each series of challenges will be focused towards the individual group dynamics.  Download Registration Form

OUTDOOR SKILLS

Available Year-Round

Orienteering I  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 18

This program is for girls who are beginners to orienteering.  Girls will learn how to use a compass through games and activities.  Winter classes may be held inside a unit.  Download Registration Form

OUTDOOR SKILLS

April-November

Archery  (1½ hrs.)

4th Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 18

Participants will begin with an introduction to archery safety procedures and how to handle the equipment before anyone begins to shoot.  Our arrows are target tip arrows and the girls are equipped with proper sized bows.  Girls will be shooting only at target while at camp.  Download Registration Form

Orienteering II  (3 hrs.)

4th Grade or Higher Only  |  $8/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 18

Girls will get a review on how to use the compass, learn how to calculate walking distance, and follow a set-up course using a topographic map of the camp area.  Course will also include trail signs.  Download Registration Form

Fishing Program  (1½ hrs.)

4th Grade or Higher Only  |  $8/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 18

Girls will begin with an introduction to fishing and proper care of equipment.  Practice casting on shore, tying knots, and learn about safety for themselves as well as others around them.  This is a 1½ hour course and girls will spend about ½ hour fishing in the lake.  This is a catch-and-release fishing program.  Download Registration Form

NATURE AT CAMP

Available Year-Round

Ecology Discovery  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Investigate the areas of camp on and off trails.  Girls will get down on their hands and knees and see what lives beneath the dirt.  They will also go on a short hike during this session and can document discoveries in camp journals they will make themselves.  Download Registration Form

Wildlife  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Study the animals at camp.  Go for a hike and see what has been running through camp.  You will have time to cast your own animal track and take it home to remember your experience.  Download Registration Form

Birding at Camp  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Discover native and migratory birds at camp.  Use your own creativity and design your own bird during this activity.  Bring binoculars.  Download Registration Form

Wetland Adventures  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Explore the wetlands, discover the plants & animals that live in the watershed and go for a hike to explore the wildlife.  Download Registration Form

AQUATICS

Permission Slip Required  |  May-September

All aquatic activities are supervised by qualified camp staff, who have completed emergency aquatic procedures training.  No one is allowed to enter the water unless a GSMD lifeguard or boating instructor is present.  A strict buddy system is used.  All boating classes include proper safety instructions including getting in and out of boats and use of PFD (lifejackets).  PFD required for all participants in boating regardless of their swimming ability.  Troops must provide adequate number of adults to serve as observers, who will receive orientation prior to boating activity.

Row-Boating  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

After an introduction to rowboat safety, girls and adults will be able to have an enjoyable row around the lake at camp.  Brownies and young Juniors will be required to have an adult in each boat with the girls to help with rowing, if needed.  Download Registration Form

Paddle Boats  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

After an introduction to paddleboat safety, girls and adults will be able to paddle around the lake at Camp Metamora.  Brownies will be required to have an adult in each boat with the girls to assist if needed.  Download Registration Form

Memorial Day Weekend-Labor Day Weekend

Canoe I  (1½ hrs.)

5th Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Girls and adults will have this introduction session in our swimming area.  They will practice getting in and out of canoes, changing places, and practice at least 3 types of paddle strokes.  The canoes will not be leaving the swim area during this session.  Come dressed to get in the water, participants will get wet.  Upon completion of this session, girls will have the opportunity to take a swim test, which must be passed in order to participate in Canoe II.  Download Registration Form

Canoe II  (3 hrs.)

7th Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 8 girls; maximum 12

Girls will begin in the swim area for a quick review of Canoe I, take a swim test (must pass in order to continue) and practice swamping a canoe.  Upon completion of this, they will have time to paddle around the lake, practicing canoeing skills.  Prerequisite is Canoe I, and pass the swim test which includes swimming 4 lengths and treading water for 2 minutes.  Download Registration Form

Swimming  (1½ hrs.)

2nd Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls; maximum 20

Session begins with orientation presented by a certified lifeguard.  Swimming area is consists of 3 areas, based on skill.  Girls wishing to swim in these must first pass a swimming proficiency test designed for that area.  Swim tests are offered if time allows for the amount of swimmers during a session.  A strict buddy system is used at all times.  Troops and groups are required to provide enough adults to serve as observers during their session.  Observers will receive orientation prior to the girls entering the water (1 observer for every 10 swimmers).  Download Registration Form

WINTER PROGRAMS

Permission Slip Required  |  January & February

Ice Skating  (1½ hrs.)

4th Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls

Ice thickness permitting, girls will be able to participate in 1½ hours of skating.  Participants must bring their own skates.  Girls will begin session with basic instruction and proper conduct rules.  If an OPF fire builder is present, you may keep a fire going in the fire ring near the skating area.  Download Registration Form

Ice Fishing  (1½ hrs.)

4th Grade or Higher Only  |  $4/each, minimum 10 girls

Girls will begin with introduction to fishing and proper care of equipment.  Practice casting on shore, typing knots, and learn about safety for themselves and others around them.  Girls will spend 1½ hours on the lake.  Download Registration Form
